We went on a hike yesterday afternoon. We thought we'd take advantage of the beautiful weather and moderate temperatures and spend the day outside. We started with a commune gathering on our front porch where we decided a hike was in order.
We started off around 6:30. Five grown ups and 5 kids, 4 hiking kids and Jax in the backpack. Ambitious, no? The hike is roughly 1.5 to the oasis and then of course the 1.5 miles back. Bunny and Emma lead the pack with Kelly and Maryam on their heels. Brett, Jax and I were in the middle. Christi, Ian and Anna hung out in the back. Ian kept stopping to point out different types of rocks. Love that kid.
Here is one of the views we stopped to admire. The sky was still a little hazy from the fires we had earlier in the week.
Here is my hiking rock star. Maryam was on a mission. She kept repeating hike, hike, hike, hike as she trudged up the mountain. She kept up with the leaders of the pack and never complained once. She tripped and fell twice and cried for a few seconds on the second fall.
Maryam had a great time! She kept trying to pass everyone, which wasn't safe, so we had to explain to her to stay in line to help prevent getting hurt.
Another view we stopped to admire.
Here is another view. This one you can see parts of our little town and the MCAGCC in the back, nestled against the mountains in the distance.
Here is another picture of our town. You can see the majority of it here.
This picture was taken looking up out of the canyon leading to the oasis.
Here is a picture of the oasis from afar. Notice how much greener the foliage is there. When we got there the water wasn't above ground. We haven't had enough rain this summer yet.
We went up to the upper oasis lookout.
Here it is! We got there right at sunset. I want to say sunset was at 7:36pm last night and we got there at 7:25. We hiked back in the dark. It was pitch black about 45 minutes into our hike back. The moon hadn't even risen yet. Thankfully Emma brought a flashlight. It took 1 hour and 7 minutes to get back to our cars. The girls had a rougher time on the way back. I had to carry Maryam for about 15 minutes. Christi carried Anna for a while too. Brett ended the hike with Anna in his arms and Jax on his back. He wins.
