Lactose Test

Over the weekend Jax had been running a low grade fever.  Tuesday morning he woke up at 4 am with a fever of 103.9.  Of course I freaked out.  I hate anything over 103.  I dosed him with Tylenol and Motrin and put a cold compress on his head.  I got him down to 99 and by 6 he was back to sleep.  I took him to the doctor at 1:30 and he said its just a sore throat and the fever should be gone in 3 to 5 days.  ugh.  So, later that day it spiked again to 104.3.  Of course I freaked out AGAIN.  I laid with him in his little toddler bed until he started talking and moving around again. This time I dosed him, put a cold compress on his head and then gave him a cool bath until he got down under 100.  It sucked.  Poor baby.
Thankfully it hasn't been up that high since Tuesday.  Its been hovering around 99.5-100.5, which is OK.  I've been giving him Motrin around the clock so he isn't uncomfortable.  Fortunately he doesn't get drowsy from Motrin so it hasn't affected his activity level!
On another note, the doc said to slowly introduce dairy to Jax.  So, last night we took the kids to get ice cream.  He had been asking to go to the "ice cream shop" for days.  He wanted a chocolate cone.  He had maybe 1/3 of a small chocolate cone.  Sadly, last night and this morning he had a belly ache.  Ugh.  Sounds like this lactose thing is a little more serious than we thought.  It was such a minimal amount!
Today I took the children to Chuck E Cheese because they had been asking to go.  He had one piece of pizza.  We'll see how he does tonight and tomorrow.  The only dairy he's had since last night was that single slice of pizza.  Hopefully he doesn't have a belly ache.  Only time will tell.

Lactose Free, Day 5

Nap time has not gotten any easier, neither has bed time, for that matter. But, Jax's belly aches have stopped! He did have some diarrhea yesterday, which was weird. I didn't screw up yesterday or today. He hasn't had any lactose at all, none.
It's been a challenge for all of us but we're doing it! He misses milk and asks for it a few times a day. But he's starting to understand that there are certain foods he cannot eat. I explain that there is milk in it and then he says ok and talks about how milk makes his belly ache. It sucks, but he understands.
Maryam is being a great big sister! She's being supportive. It's pretty great! I'm very proud of her.
Last night Maryam sat down and read a book from cover to cover. A book she had never seen. We have never read it to her. Being a parent is many things and one of those things is getting to see your baby turn into a child. Watching that child grow and learn is pretty amazing. Everyday I'm a little more proud of and surprised by what they can do. I'm so lucky to know these guys and even luckier to be the person they call Mommy.

Lactose Free, Day 3

Jax still hasn't had a belly ache since Tuesday morning at 9am!! Woohoo!
I had another slip up today. He asked for a snack at Mayda's kid's basketball game and I gave M&M'S. Once I remembered that M&M'S might have milk in them, I pretended he ran out! I guess that's my "go to" plan for when I screw up.
So far, the only issues we've had is with Jax going to bed. He begs for milk. Poor baby. Poor mommy feels terrible. But, he seems to be doing better!

Lactose free, day 2

So today started out ok. And really, it ended ok too. Jax didn't have any belly aches and I only accidentally gave him dairy once! Yay me! Hahaha Maryam had chocolate pudding for a snack so Jax wanted some too. Not thinking, I gave him some. Well, I remembered when he was about half way through it. I pretended he finished it all and gave him watermelon instead.
The rough parts of the day are nap time and bed time. He really misses his milk before going to his bed. But singing to him and patting/rubbing his back seems to be working fine. It takes a bit longer than filling his belly and inducing a milk coma but if this makes his tummy aches go away, I'm all for it!

San Diego

We took Jax to San Diego last Monday for another urology appointment. He had an ultrasound before seeing the doc. The ultrasound showed that Jax's kidney is exactly how it should look after having the surgical repair that he had a few years ago! That's great news! The bad news is we still have no idea what's causing him so much pain.
After his appointment we went out to lunch with Brett's friend from college. It was nice seeing him again. It had been a while! After lunch we took the trolley down to Sea Port Village for a snack and shopping. The kids LOVED it!!! After that we headed to see our friends Mike and Jen. Jen is a NICU nurse at the hospital both kids were born.
We're so lucky! We have some really great friends. We got to see Kyle and Jen and Mike all in one day. The kids were great all day. The weather was nice and cool. It was a wonderful, wonderful day.
